Juliana Ferragonio still enjoys the slots at 100; Adele Anderson turns 102.
Tuesday, September 07, 2010

Affectionately called "Grandma Jewel" by her family, Juliana Ferragonio is always ready for a card game or a spin at the slot machine, even at 100 years old.

She was born in Croatia on Aug. 26, 1910, and moved to the United States when she was 13. With just an eighth-grade education, she got a job as a waitress to help support her family. When she was 17, she moved out of the family home and she and a girlfriend moved into an apartment in Shadyside.

At a nearby dance club, she met Adam Ferragonio Sr. They had five children and were married for more than 60 years until his death in 1993. She has lived in Green Tree for the past 50 years and has 65 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Church is her family

Adele Anderson and her late husband, Robert, never had children. But at age 102, she has a doting family in the fellow members of Warren Methodist Church.

She was born on Aug. 25, 1908, in Louisiana. She never completed high school and went to work. She married in 1934 and moved to Pittsburgh in 1936. She says she was a "day worker," which meant doing odd jobs including house-cleaning.

She and her husband traveled often, visiting Canada, New York, California, Utah and many places in between. As a longtime member of Warren Methodist Church, Ms. Anderson is often visited by members and enjoys conversation and listening to music. She lives at Heartland Healthcare in Shadyside.

When asked how she feels about being 102 years old, Ms. Anderson said: "I won't say I'm tired just yet."
